User-Behavior Based Detection of Infection Onset
A major vector of computer infection is through exploiting software or design flaws in networked applications such as the browser. Malicious code can be fetched and executed on a victim’s machine without the user’s permission, as in drive-by download (DBD) attacks. In this paper, we describe a new tool called DeWare for detecting the onset of infection delivered through vulnerable applications. DeWare explores and enforces causal relationships between computer-related human behaviors and system properties, such as file-system access and process execution. Our tool can be used to provide real time protection of a personal computer, as well as for diagnosing and evaluating untrusted websites for forensic purposes. Besides the concrete DBD detection solution, we also formally define causal relationships between user actions and system events on a host. Identifying and enforcing correct causal relationships have important applications in realizing advanced and secure operating systems. We perform extensive experimental evaluation, including a user study with 21 participants, thousands of legitimate websites (for testing false alarms), as well as 84 malicious websites in the wild. Our results show that DeWare is able to correctly distinguish legitimate download events from unauthorized system events with a low false positive rate (< 1%)
The role of the principal as verified by the secondary school department chairpersons in Guilford County, North Carolina
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions which the secondary school department chairpersons, within Guilford County, North Carolina, have regarding the role of the principal according to a five conception framework initially designed by Brubaker and Simon (1987). The effects of four independent variables— the number of years experience as a department chairperson, the degree of the chairperson, the subject area of the chairperson, and the gender of the department chairperson--on the conceptual leadership roles selected by the department chairperson were also examined. Data were obtained from a survey of 142 public secondary school department chairpersons in the three public school districts within Guilford County, North Carolina—Greensboro City, Guilford County, and High Point City. An analysis of the data suggested the secondary school department chairpersons view the actual role of the principal as that of a general manager. For the preferred principal's role, the department chairpersons selected the administrative/instructional leader's role even though their comments on the open-ended question were considered to be managerial rather than instructional in nature
Homogeneous links, Seifert surfaces, digraphs and the reduced Alexander polynomial
We give a geometric proof of the following result of Juhasz. \emph{Let
be the leading coefficient of the Alexander polynomial of an alternating knot
. If then has a unique minimal genus Seifert surface.} In
doing so, we are able to generalise the result, replacing `minimal genus' with
`incompressible' and `alternating' with `homogeneous'. We also examine the
implications of our proof for alternating links in general.Comment: 37 pages, 28 figures; v2 Main results generalised from alternating

Pulse radiolysis of liquid water using picosecond electron pulses produced by a table-top terawatt laser system
A laser based electron generator is shown, for the first time, to produce sufficient charge to conduct time resolved investigations of radiation induced chemical events. Electron pulses generated by focussing terawatt laser pulses into a supersonic helium gas jet are used to ionize liquid water. The decay of the hydrated electrons produced by the ionizing electron pulses is monitored with 0.3 μs time resolution. Hydrated electron concentrations as high as 22 μM were generated. The results show that terawatt lasers offer both an alternative to linear accelerators and a means to achieve subpicosecond time resolution for pulse radiolysis studies. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/69949/2/RSINAK-71-6-2305-1.pd
Genus generators and the positivity of the signature
It is a conjecture that the signature of a positive link is bounded below by
an increasing function of its negated Euler characteristic. In relation to this
conjecture, we apply the generator description for canonical genus to show that
the boundedness of the genera of positive knots with given signature can be
algorithmically partially decided. We relate this to the result that the set of
knots of canonical genus greater than or equal to n is dominated by a finite
subset of itself in the sense of Taniyama's partial order.Comment: This is the version published by Algebraic & Geometric Topology on 13

Hand2 delineates mesothelium progenitors and is reactivated in mesothelioma.
The mesothelium lines body cavities and surrounds internal organs, widely contributing to homeostasis and regeneration. Mesothelium disruptions cause visceral anomalies and mesothelioma tumors. Nonetheless, the embryonic emergence of mesothelia remains incompletely understood. Here, we track mesothelial origins in the lateral plate mesoderm (LPM) using zebrafish. Single-cell transcriptomics uncovers a post-gastrulation gene expression signature centered on hand2 in distinct LPM progenitor cells. We map mesothelial progenitors to lateral-most, hand2-expressing LPM and confirm conservation in mouse. Time-lapse imaging of zebrafish hand2 reporter embryos captures mesothelium formation including pericardium, visceral, and parietal peritoneum. We find primordial germ cells migrate with the forming mesothelium as ventral migration boundary. Functionally, hand2 loss disrupts mesothelium formation with reduced progenitor cells and perturbed migration. In mouse and human mesothelioma, we document expression of LPM-associated transcription factors including Hand2, suggesting re-initiation of a developmental program. Our data connects mesothelium development to Hand2, expanding our understanding of mesothelial pathologies
